Police cop awards for diversity

A police chief says his staff are ready to work in today's multi cultural society after they picked up a string of qualifications, with a little help from NCFE.

Hartlepool Police staff have passed the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity with flying colours.

Twelve people from Hartlepool Police, from support staff to Chief Inspectors have signed up to the course since 2008.

Hartlepool District Commander, Superintendent Andy Summerbell, who also successfully obtained his NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Managing Diversity said, "We live in a diverse society and in our roles as police officers and police staff we come into contact with a wide cariety of people who have different backgrounds, views, values and beliefs."

"Understanding and respecting these differences is essential for us to carrty out our roles effectively and provide the best possible service to the public."

The staff took on the course in addition to their everyday roles, over a course of several weeks. 6 other staff members also attained the NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Managing Diversity.

The qualification is designed to develop knowledge by raising awareness and by providing practical advice on how to manage diversity in organisations.
